Camp Stewart, Georgia

These handkerchiefs and holders were purchased by soldiers at their bases or in the places where they were stationed, and sent home to their loved ones, wives, mothers, or sisters. The soldier gave them as keepsakes. The hankies holder is an item that dates back to the First World War. Many have beautiful verses written on them as well as colorful designs and emblems.

This holder, referring to the anti-aircraft (AA) units at Camp Stewart, Georgia, it was a gift for the soldier’s mother and contains two handkerchiefs bearing the insignia of the Coast Artillery.

Established in late 1940 near Savannah, Georgia, Camp Stewart was a major World War II training hub for Anti-Aircraft Artillery units, training over 55.000 soldiers by 1944. It specialized in training crewmen for 40mm Bofors and other AA weapons.
