Martin J. Joyce was born on March 15, 1926, in Youngstown, Ohio, as the son of Martin E. and Mary (Healey) Joyce and was a longtime area resident. Martin Joyce enlisted (#35931126) on August 7, 1944 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a 1944 graduate of Ursuline High School, where he was captain of the football team and elected to the All City Team and the Ursuline High School Hall of Fame. During the war he was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946 with General Patton in the 3rd Army Infantry, having received a Bronze Star, a Combat Infantry Badge, and three Battle Stars, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe.
After arriving back home in the US, he married his wife, the former Anne Conaboy, on February 7, 1948. He then graduated from Youngstown College in 1950. Martin Joyce worked for Republic Steel Corporation in the open hearth division, for Bucheit Construction Company, and also sold real estate. Marty managed and coached in the Mill Creek Jr. Baseball League for over 30 years with the Kirby Sweepers team, was one of the coaches of many tournament teams and was a trustee for the league. He was responsible for the starting the Girl’s Pigtail League and was instrumental in lights being constructed at the Mill Creek Jr. League fields.
