Charles Clayton Pauley was born on April 19, 1921, in Elk, West Virginia, to Emmet Lewis (1898-1983) and Ethel I. (1898-1983) Pauley. He still lived in Elk, West Virginia when he enlisted (#35448839) on October 9,1942 in Huntington, West Virginia. At that time he had a 2 years of high school education, his  civil occupation was listed as "Sales clerks".

After the War, he married Mattie Marie Rose on August 24, 1946.

Charles Pauley died on October 6, 1987, after a short illness. He and his wife Mattie M. Pauley (1918-1994) are buried at the Pauley Family Cemetery, Frame, Kanawha County, West Virginia.
