T/Sgt Archibald J. Poole

Archibald John Poole of Shelburne, Vermont, born July 25, 1905, as son of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey T. Poole, was self-employed as carpenter and farmer, before he entered the service on May 28, 1942 at Rutland, Vermont.

Archibald Poole, #31115025, served 13 months overseas with the 2082nd Engineer Aviation Utilities Detachment in Italy. A small unit of highly-skilled technicians, the 2082nd landed in Italy in May 1944 to relieve larger airfield-building units for new construction by taking over maintenance of airfields. Assigned to an important 15th Air Force base in southern Italy, they tackled a job which would have normally required a unit four times its size

Archibald Poole was construction foreman an technician, serving as first sergeant for the detachment and supervising about 50 men in construction work, company and airfield grading. His group also served as utility company, doing all types of repair and maintenance. Archie participated in Italy and Rome – Arno combat areas under Captain Oscar Frost, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the European – African – Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal, the Expert Rifle and Carbine medals. He has been honorably discharged after 38 months of service in July, 1945.

After the war he did repair work at home. Archibald Poole passed away in 1983.
