Book 'An 83rd Division Medic - Angel of the Minefield'
by Laurie McDonald Maley
Paperback Edition published November 23, 2017 by Laurie McDonald Maley (daughter). The story of 83rd division medic Cpl Ambrose 'Hank' McDonald gets dramatized in the form of poems from stories handed down to his daughter Laurie. You feel you are right there along with Hank, whether on a lonely Christmas Eve during boot camp days or eating K-rations with a shrapnel-laced cow in France. From the serious to the humorous, go along for the ride back to WWII. Letters sent home by Hank and his wartime photographs with personal captions also provided a wealth of information in the writing of this book.
This project started with the title poem, "Angel of the Minefield", but grew so all could appreciate the life of this medic, as only one so close to him could portray. Drawings by Laurie of her dad and other 83rd soldiers round out this book. Laurie McDonald Maley is a graduate of Shippensburg State College (now Shippensburg University), with a B.A. in English. She resides in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, but grew up in the same small town of Tremont her father had. Like many in her family, including Hank and her grandfather, post college Laurie worked for the same coal company office. After starting a family, she dabbled in freelance writing and photography. Laurie is avid in her writing of poetry, songs with her acoustic guitar, and her photographic work.
I got this book from Laurie McDonald Maley, daughter of Ambrose J. 'Hank' McDonald. I met Laurie at several 83rd Reunions.
