Richard L. Hoffman joined the 83rd ARCOM on September 11, 1972, and was assigned to the G-3 section. One year later he attended the Armor Officer Advance Course for nine months. Returning to the ARCOM he was assigned to the Headquarters Commandant's office where he eventually became HQ Commandant. He remained there until 1978 when he moved to the G-4 section. In 1979 he assumed command of the 367th Public Affairs Detachment. Three years later he assumed command of the 326th Military History Detachment. In 1986 he was assigned to the 2078th USARF School, serving as the AVITS officer, Operations officer and Command an General Staff College instructor. He is currently attached to the 2078th USARF School as the school historian and acts as the 83rd ARCOM historian. Among his many honors are the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal.
He lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife Linda, since being released from active duty in 1972.
