Private Fred W. Geschwind

Fred William Geschwind was born on February 21, 1895, in Massillon, Ohio, to Gertrude Rhine (1863–1945) and Herman Geschwind (1865–1952). Fred's grandparents were German immigrants, born in Hessen and Bavaria.

After joining the military he was assigned to the 324th Field Artillery Battalion with whom he served for the duration of his time in the military. He went overseas with the 324th as a part of the AEF on June 12, 1918 and returned after almost a year of service in Europe on May 22, 1919. He saw action in France, Germany and the Meuse-Argonne sector. Private Geschwind was honorably discharged on June 5, 1919.

Fred's brother Howard Geschwind served stateside with the 332nd Infantry Regiment of the 83rd Infantry Division. Shortly before going overseas he was transferred to the 11th Infantry Regiment which took part in the Vosges Mountains, Saint-Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne offensives as part of the 5th Infantry Division.

Fred Geschwind married Mary C. Thompson in 1919 and they had seven children together in 11 years. She died as a young mother on February 17, 1935, in Massillon, Ohio, at the age of 34. He then married Emma Louise Hatcher in Marshall, West Virginia, on July 17, 1935, when he was 40 years old and they had four children together. Fred William Geschwind died on December 18, 1964, in Massillon, Ohio, when he was 69 years old.
