Harry James Derivan was born on October 22, 1892, in New Vienna, Ohio, to Susan I. McCabe (1861–1937) and Hubert James Derivan (1858-1935).
After joining the military he received his commission as a First Lieutenant on November 27, 1917. 1st Lt. Derivan served with the 324th Field Artillery for the duration of his time with the military. He went overseas with the 324th as a part of the AEF on June 12, 1918 and returned after almost a year of service in Europe on May 22, 1919. He saw action in France, Germany and the Meuse-Argonne sector. 1st Lt. Derivan was honorably discharged on June 21, 1919.
Harry James Derivan married Eleanor T. Hall in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 2, 1923. He died on March 31, 1973, in Dade City, Florida, when he was 80 years old. His wife Eleanor Derivan died on April 19, 1974.
