Camp Breckenridge

Items related to the 83rd Infantry Division

When the Tennessee Maneuvers were over, the 83rd Division was ordered to Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, a distance of a hundred miles, to be covered by marching at about fifteen miles a day, September 1943. There the men were given advanced infantry training and prepared for overseas duty. The 83rd continued with their training until the spring of 1944. On April 6, 1944, the 83rd embarked the S.S. George Washington from New York City for Liverpool, England under command of then Brigadier General Robert C. Macon.

At the Post Exchange (PX) or in any cheap shop near the posts, GI's could buy any kind of trinket and souvenirs, bearing their branche of service, unit insignia or the name of their post. These gifts were usually mailed to relatives, friends, ..., or brought home on furlough. All these items were available to the GI's of the 83rd Infantry Division as well to GI's of other divisions stationed in the Camps, etc.
