John Smith Kelly was born on August 4, 1910, in Looneyville, West Virginia, to Melissa Adeline Samples (1885–1976) and Alfred Gay Kelly (1885–1971). He married Gusta Faye Naylor in Roane, West Virginia, in 1929 when he was 19 years old. They had five children during their marriage.
John S. Kelly entered the service as a draftee (#33900751) on December 2, 1943 at Baltimore, Maryland. The Morning Report from July 24, 1944 listed '33900751 Kelly, John S. 605 (= Heavy Machine Gunner)' as assigned and joined to Company from Headquarters 48th Replacements Battalion.
His wife Gusta Faye Kelly passed away on March 20, 1995, in Looneyville, West Virginia, at the age of 80. They had been married 65 years. John Smith Kelly died on August 25, 2009, in Roane, West Virginia, when he was 99 years old.
