John Berens was born on May 14, 1915, in Michigan to Lida Harmson and John G. Berens. He married Fannie Timmer on July 22, 1939. They had one child during their marriage.
John Berens enlisted in the Army (#36971797) and he proudly served his country as a member of the G Company, 330th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division in the European Theatre. Morning report G/330 for January 8, 1945 listed Pvt. John Berens as assigned and joined from 92nd Replacement Battalion as of January 4, 1945. He promoted to Private First Class as of January 14, 1945 and promoted to Sergeant, dy Squad Leader (653) as of January 31, 1945. The Morning report for April 21, 1945, while in the vicinity of Barby, Germany, listed Sgt. John Berens, Lightly wounded in action and duty to 609th Clearing Station and returned to duty on April 22, 1945.
For his service he was awarded, among other decorations, the Combat Infantry Badge, the European African Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal, the Purple Heart Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.
John Berens died on June 7, 1977, in Douglas, Michigan, when he was 62 years old. He was survived by his wife Fannie Berens (1917-2005).
