Identified Envelope and Letter
Envelope identified to James A. Sligh - HQ Company, 3rd Battalion, 331st Infantry Regiment
Original WWII Army censored envelope dated March 19, 1945 and contains an original commendation letter written by General Macon to Colonel York, Commanding Officer, 331st Infantry Regiment. With a small note of his own Colonel York passed on the letter to the men of his regiment. Pfc. James A. Sligh send the commendation home to his sister Ruth (Mrs. Walter E. Stroud) of Newberry, South Carolina, along with a small sheet of popular Army songs. At the time this letter was posted, the 331st was recuperating and training in Germany after their actions on the Rhine River.

Private First Class James A. Sligh
James Albert Sligh was born on July 8, 1922, in Newberry, South Carolina, to Mary Elizabeth Cromer (1888–1944) and Albert Amelia Sligh (1885–1964).
James A. Sligh enlisted (#34389459) in the Army on October 10, 1942, in Fort Jackson Columbia, South Carolina. He was with Hq Company, 3rd Battalion, 331st Infantry Regiment. On 15 April 1945 he was attached to the 83rd MP Platoon per Special Order 80, along with other members of Hq Company. He remained with the MP Platoon until VE-Day, 8 May 1945. After VE-Day he returned to his regular duty with Hq Company, 3rd Battalion of the 331st.
James Albert Sligh married Mildred Mae Millican (1924–1996) in Birmingham, Alabama, on January 4, 1946, when he was 23 years old. He died on March 2, 1994 in Sneads, Florida.
