Identified V-Mail

V-Mail identified to Robert O. Smith - G Company, 331st Infantry Regiment

Original WW2 V-Mail letter in its original form, dated December 18, 1945. The V-Mail was sent by Pfc. Robert O. Smith, from somwhere in Austria to Dr. + Mrs W.L. Green, Lexington, Georgia (his brother in law and his sister). The V-Mail contains "Seasons Greetings from Austria" and there is a very beautiful drawing related to the 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division inside. The address the V-Mail was sent from APO83, which according to 'Numerical listings of APO's' was located in Linz, Austria on this date.
Note: Put into practice in June 1942, V-mail became the most popular way for the troops to correspond across the ocean. As a way to limit bulk mail, V-mail blanks were submitted, photographed, then condensed and sent in special envelopes.

Private First Class Robert O. Smith

Robert Otis Smith was born on August 28, 1918 in Crawford, Georgia as the youngest son of Robert Otis Sr. (1876-1943) and Katerine Choffin Smith (1879-1956). His father Robert Otis Sr. served in World War One. Robert O. Smith Jr. married Marian North.

Robert O. Smith Jr. (#34839141) entered the service one year after the dead of his father on July 26, 1944. He served in G Company, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Division, before being discharged on June 29, 1946.

Robert O. Smith Jr. died at Tucker Nursing Center from complications of Alzheimer's disease on 27 November 1993. Surviving was his wife Marian Smith (1919-2012).
