Pins and Chain Pins - 83rd Infantry Division
When the US goes to war myriad types of jewelry are made for home use to show your support for your soldier and your country. The extravagant femininity of women's fashions in the 1940's brought thousands of unusual and decorative military sweetheart items into the marketplace. Many of these items do not fall into a spacialized category other than branch of service.
Son in Service Chain Pin
This is a wonderful World War Two 83rd Son in Service chain pin or home front souvenir. The single star pin has red, white, and blue enamel accents with one blue star representing a son in service and is attached by chain to the 83rd Infantry Division patch in black and Gold enamel. Not marked but has the typical era manufactured pin back fasteners.
A "Son-in-Service" Pin, was usually worn by mothers and/or fathers to show that a loved one was in the military. In this case, the Family Member is serving in the 83rd Infantry Division. Note the blue star pin is surrounded by 28 small silver stars.
Patriotic Chain Pin
This is a wonderful World War Two 83rd Sweetheart chain pin or home front souvenir. The Eagle with Shield is attached by chain to the 83rd Infantry Division patch in black and Gold enamel.
This chain pin is shown on his original display card. The manufacturer, H.H.P. Whittmore and Co. of Attleboro, Massachusetts, was one of the largest producers of military jewelry during World War II. Circa 1942-1945.
Jewelry in Gold
Extremely rare Vintage 83rd Infantry Division Pin of the 83rd patch in black and Gold enamel and has the old screw back closure, made by H.R. Terryberry Co. Almost seems like could be made of gold but I can find no markings. Measures 9/16" tall by 7/16" wide.
The manufacturer, H.R. Terryberry Co. of Grand Rapids, Michigan stopped using this hallmark in the early 1970s. This pin most likely dates to pre 1946 since this is the year the 83rd was disbanded.

During World War II, Whittemore & Co. of Attleboro, Massachusetts made different types of sweetheart jewelry this one depicting the Thunderbolt Division Patch. This pin was originally a pinback type but was replaced with a clutchback type device.
