Charles Clayton Pauley was born on April 19, 1921, in Kanawha, West Virginia, to Ethel Ida Morris (1897–1983) and Emmett Lewis Pauley (1897–1983).
Charles C. Pauley enlisted in the Army on on October 9, 1942 in Huntington, West Virginia. He was one of the early members of Anti-Tank Company. He was with them at basic training in Camp Atterbury, Indiana, then went to the Tennessee maneuvers an to Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky. Early April, 1944 Anti-Tank Company was stationed at Camp Shanks from where they left the US. They headed for Europe aboard the HMT Samaria. He arrived in Liverpool on April 16 from where they left for Wales by train. The unit boarded the SS Lucy Stone on July 19, 1944 for France but due to heavy weather it took them 5 days to arrive at Omaha Beach. He stayed with Anti-Tank Company for the remainder of the war and was Platoon Leader of the 3rd platoon. At the end of the war he Transferred to 130th Ordnance Maintenance Battalion, 8th Armored Division as of September 10, 1945, with this unit he was then discharged. For his service he was awarded,among other decorations, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the European African Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He married Mattie Marie Rose on August 24, 1946, in Charleston, West Virginia. They had two children during their marriage. Charles Pauley died on October 6, 1987, after a short illness. He and his wife Mattie M. Pauley (1918-1994) are buried at the Pauley Family Cemetery, in his hometown Frame, West Virginia.
