Claude Nelson Sanders was born on March 19, 1918, in Fremont, Iowa, to Blanche Wanda Spittler (1889–1976), and George Forrest Sanders (1888–1980). Claude Sanders married Alice May Varley in San Diego, California, on December 4, 1940, when he was 22 years old, they had one child.
He enlisted in the Army on January 9, 1941, in Omaha, Nebraska. For the majority of WW2 he served stateside with B Battery of the 523rd Coast Artillery Battalion. On April 7, 1945, he was send overseas as an infantry replacement. The Morning Reports from May 18, 1945 list him as assigned and joined G/331 from the 36th Reinforcement Battalion. At that time, Company G was on occupation duty in Germany. He returned to the US on December 24, 1945.
Claude Nelson Sanders died on September 17, 2014, in Sidney, Iowa, when he was 96 years old. His wife Alice May passed away on February 23, 2007, in Sidney, Iowa. They had been married 66 years.
