Eugene Fujawa was born on September 16, 1924, in South Bend, Indiana, to Bronislawa Sordyl and Ferdynand Fujawa. Both of his parents where born in Poland. He was the youngest of nine children. He was brought up by his mother following the death of his father in 1933 when Eugene was 9 years old.
Eugene Fujawa enlisted on April 21, 1943 in Toledo, Ohio. He served with the 393rd Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division. With them, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and they were the first infantry to bring forces up to the Rhine and assisted in the final drive across the Danube to the heart of Bavaria. On July 10, 1945, during Ocupation Duty, he was assigned to the 83rd Division, joining Cannon Company, 329th Infantry Regiment. Eugene Fujawa would only be a member of the 329th for two months as he was reassigned on September 20 to HQ, 3rd US Army and returned home with them. For his service he was awarded the European African Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 campaign stars.
Eugene Fujawa married Wanda Cichowicz in St. Joseph, Indiana, on October 18, 1947. He died on February 24, 2002, in South Bend, Indiana. His wife Wanda Cichowicz Fujawa died on October 5, 2012, in South Bend, Indiana, when she was 87 years old.
