Technician 4th Grade Harold Schoenberg

Harold Schoenberg was born on January 6, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Lillian Frank (1900-1967) and Sam Schoenberg (1898-1965). A family of Jewish Hungarian origin. Harold was studying at the Agricultural College in Doylestown, PA when he decided to sign up for the army.

Harold 'Hal' Schoenberg enlisted in the Army on on October 20, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was one of the early members of Anti-Tank Company. He was with them at basic training in Camp Atterbury, Indiana, then went to the Tennessee maneuvers an to Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky. Early April, 1944 Anti-Tank Company was stationed at Camp Shanks from where they left the US. They headed for Europe and arrived in Liverpool on April 16 from where they left for Wales by train. Based on te Morning Reports he was attached to Radio School, 83rd Infantry Division as of April 26, 1944 and returned to duty on April 30, 1944. He was listed as Non Battle Casualty (due to disease) and duty to 83rd General Hospital on May 30, 1944 and returned to duty on June 6, 1944 (D-Day). The unit boarded on July 19, 1944 for France but due to heavy weather it took them 5 days to arrive at Omaha Beach. He stayed with Anti-Tank Company for the remainder of the war. He promoted from T/4 to Sergeant as of December 16, 1944. He was listed as Non Battle Casualty (due to disease) and transferred to 96th Evacuation Hospital on December 25, 1944 and assigned and joined AT/329 from 92nd Replacement Battalion as of January 11, 1945. Harold Schoenberg married Joyce Gwen Jones in Wrexham, Denbighshire, Wales, in April 1945. For his service he was awarded, among other decorations, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the European African Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal awarded for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity on November 12, 1943.

Harold Schoenberg died on July 11, 1987 at his home in Rhosllanerchrugog, North Wales where he lived with his wife Joyce who survived. Joyce gwen Jones died on June 15, 2017 in Wrexham, Wales.
