James Lavery Meade was born on January 7, 1922 in Media, Pennsylvania, as the son of Sara D. Lavery and Cyrus E. Meade.

James Meade was ordered to report for induction in the U.S. Army on December 4, 1942. He served with Cannon Company, 393rd Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division. With them, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge and they were the first infantry to bring forces up to the Rhine and assisted in the final drive across the Danube to the heart of Bavaria. On July 10, 1945, during Ocupation Duty, he was assigned to the 83rd Division, joining Cannon Company, 329th Infantry Regiment. James Meade would only be a member of the 329th for two months as he was reassigned on September 25 to the 949th Field Artillery Battalion. He returned home with them and was honorably discarged in December 1945. For his service he was awarded the European African Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 campaign stars.

James L. Meade died unexpectedly at the Mercy Hospital in Scranton on January 3, 2001. His beloved wife, the former Mary Ann Thomas died in 1976.
