Technician 5th Grade Peter J. Zawatski

Peter Joseph Zawatski was born on August 26, 1912 in Sugar Notch, Pennsylvania, to Anna Victoria Zaborowski (1883–1964) and Peter Paul Zawatski (1863–1943), a Polish imigrant.

Peter J. Zawatski enlisted on October 20, 1942 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He was one of the early members of Anti-Tank Company. He was with them at basic training in Camp Atterbury, Indiana, then went to the Tennessee maneuvers an to Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky. Early April, 1944 Anti-Tank Company was stationed at Camp Shanks from where they left the US. They headed for Europe and arrived in Liverpool on April 16 from where they left for Wales by train. The unit boarded on July 19, 1944 for France but due to heavy weather it took them 5 days to arrive at Omaha Beach. He stayed with Anti-Tank Company for the remainder of the war. For his service he was awarded, among other decorations, the Combat Infantryman's Badge.

Peter J. Zawatski married Felicia Czarnetski on May 21, 1949 in Luzerne, Pennsylvania. He died on February 8, 1969 at his home following a heart attack and is buried at the Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He was survived by his wife Felicia Zawatski (1913–2003).
