Sigmund (Zigmund) Michael Lesniewski was born on December 4, 1920, to Sophie Sypula (1897–1986) and Adam Lesniewski (1892–1961). Both parents where born in Poland and arrived in the US in 1910 and 1913, where they married in 1915. They had ten children in 20 years.
Sigmund M. 'Ziggie' Lesniewski enlisted in the Army on October 12, 1942, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was one of the early members of Anti-Tank Company. He was with them at basic training in Camp Atterbury, Indiana, then went to the Tennessee maneuvers an to Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky. Early April, 1944 Anti-Tank Company was stationed at Camp Shanks from where they left the US. They headed for Europe aboard the HMT Samaria. He arrived in Liverpool on April 16 from where they left for Wales by train. The unit boarded the SS Lucy Stone on July 19, 1944 for France but due to heavy weather it took them 5 days to arrive at Omaha Beach. He stayed with Anti-Tank Company for the remainder of the war. While Sigmund Fought overseas in the ETO, his brother Henry Lesniewski was killed in action on Luzon, Phillipines (PTO) in the battle for Zig-Zag pass on February 10, 1945. At the end of the war he staged at Camp Phillip Morris, Le Havre, France, before leaving for New York with the 8th Armored Division, with this unit he was then discharged on November 24, 1945. For his service he was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, the European African Middle-Eastern Campaign Medal with 5 campaign stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
Sigmund Lesniewski married Genevieve 'Jeanne' Stephany Barlog in East Chicago, Indiana, on August 17, 1946, when he was 25 years old. He died on July 7, 1984 in Highland, Lake County, Indiana and was survived by his wife Genevieve (1917-2000).
