Biography and Wartime Service
Joseph Steven Zenz was born on June 9, 1926, to Johanna Oswald (1898–1958) and Frank Zenz (1895–1956) .
Joseph S. 'Joe' Zenz was drafted on August 24, 1944 at Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania and was send overseas as a replacement. In Europe (ETO) he was assigned to I Company, 329th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Division from the 92nd Replacement Battalion on January 24, 1945, just one day before the official end of the Battle of the Bulge. He promoted to Private First Class on February 1, 1945. He was discharged on June 30, 1946. For his service, Joe Zenz received, among other decorations, the Combat Infantry Badge, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Bronze campaign star.
After the war Joseph S. Zenz married June J. Roth in 1948, whom he was married with for 53 years. He died on July 30, 2001, in his home.
I met his widow June Zenz for the first time at the Reunion of the 83rd Division Association, West Point, New York, 2011 and after that at five more Reunions.
