Biography and Wartime Service

Vernon Lawrence Leasure was born on September 28, 1922, in Caldwell, Ohio, to Anna Ruth McElfresh and Joseph Lawrence Leasure. Vernon Leasure married Catherine Jane Forshey on April 11, 1942, when he was 19 years old. He entered service on November 10, 1942 and spent most of the next two years training at Camp Atterbury, Indiana and Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky. Vernon L. Leasure was a member of Company H of the 330th Infantry, 83rd Division, when he landed on Omaha Beach, June 1944.

Afther the War, Vernon Leasure was a fleet manager for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in 1984. He was a man of many skills and various interests, foremost, family, and helping others when he could. He especially enjoyed restoring two military jeeps with his sons and attending parades and veteran's events. He was especially proud of the trophies he won from the LCPL Nate Deyarmin Memorial Car Show and the Bantam Jeep Festival.

Vernon L. Leasure, age 96 of Mogadore, Ohio, died on February 6, 2019 at Akron City Hospital, his skilled hands and compassionate heart are now at rest. Vernon was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, the former Catherine Forshey on February 20, 2010.

I had the pleasure of meeting him at the 71st Anual Reunion of the 83rd Division Association August 2017, Cleveland, Ohio.
